The story begins in November 2010. NATO leaders met in Lisbon to create a comprehensive missile defense system. Turkey agreed to host an early-warning radar system. A key condition was set. All data gathered would be exclusively for NATO member states. This ensured Turkey’s security concerns were addressed.
After an agreement in September 2011, the location was chosen. Kurecik in Malatya Province was deemed feasible. Interestingly, the site had a history. It previously hosted a radar base in the 1960s. During the Cold War, it monitored Soviet Union airspace. Later, the US Air Force used it as a communications relay.
However, the decision wasn’t without controversy. Locals protested fearing the station’s implications. Iran criticized Turkey worrying it would protect Israel from Iranian missiles. Despite the opposition, the project moved forward.
