Born in Budapest in 1941 Marcell Jankovics left an indelible mark on Hungarian animation. This modest tomb holds the remains of a giant. A true visionary often called the Walt Disney of Hungary Jankovics held a complex view of his American counterpart. He admired Disney’s dedication to animation and artistic expression. Yet he criticized Disney’s manipulative sentimentality and idealized characters. Jankovics’s own work was unique. Boldly stylized and heavily symbolic his films and series became global cult classics.
Jankovics’s career spanned decades. He directed Hungary’s first animated feature film Johnny Corncob. This landmark production was commissioned to mark the 150th anniversary of Sándor Petőfi’s birth. The film’s vibrant psychedelic style set the tone for much of his later work. His second feature Son of the White Mare is frequently cited as one of the best animated films ever made. It achieved international acclaim.
He wasn’t just a director. Jankovics wrote scripts designed storyboards and even animated parts of his own films. He was a master of many aspects of his craft. General Motors used his Sisyphus in a Super Bowl commercial. Disney even hired him for The Emperor’s New Groove. Though his work was ultimately unused on that project he received credit for additional visual development.
Jankovics’s legacy extends beyond his films. He was a prolific illustrator educator and author. He wrote extensively on culture and art.
