A century of faith woven into brick and stone. That’s the story of Saint Gertrude’s Roman Catholic Church. Right here in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood. This magnificent building stands as a testament to unwavering community spirit. It’s a place where generations have found solace and connection.

Saint Gertrude’s was established in 1912. It was built to serve the growing Catholic population of North Edgewater. The early parishioners were mostly immigrants from Germany Ireland and Luxembourg. They hailed from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds living in everything from mansions to modest apartments.

The church’s beginnings were humble. Masses were initially held in the Hayt School auditorium. Parishioners braved harsh Chicago winters. They carried the altar and other essentials back and forth. Eventually a temporary wooden church was constructed. Legend tells of Father Shewbridge warming the wine for mass with his own hands on those frigid days.

By 1912 a permanent three-story church and school were completed. The BVMs Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary ran the school for decades. Their dedicated service educated generations of children.

Plans for a grand new church began in the 1920s. The limestone was even quarried and paid for before the 1929 stock market crash. Despite the Great Depression parishioners’ determination prevailed. They even donated jewelry to help fund the building. The stunning English Gothic structure was completed in 1931. It became one of the few major buildings constructed during that difficult time.

The church’s beauty is breathtaking. Franz Mayer of Munich Germany crafted the stained-glass windows. The soaring Gothic arches ensure an unobstructed view of the altar from every seat. The altars themselves are made of exquisite Italian Carrara marble.

Saint Gertrude’s wasn’t just a place of worship. It was the heart of the community. It served as a refuge during times of crisis like 9/11. The church opened its doors to provide comfort and support. It hosted an interfaith service the following Sunday. People from different faiths came together. They sought solace and strength in each other’s company.

Over the years the parish evolved. New neighbors brought new perspectives. A diversity of backgrounds and beliefs enriched the community. This spirit of inclusivity is still evident today. Saint Gertrude’s is a place where all are welcome. It’s a place where faith stories are woven together to create a rich tapestry of community. A place that continues to offer comfort and strength to all who enter its doors.
