Completed in 1964, the Hakata Port Tower was designed by Tachu Naito. He also designed the Tokyo Tower and Osaka’s Tsutenkaku Tower. The Hakata Port Tower is one of Naito Tachu’s “Six Tower Brothers.” It marked the arrival of visitors by boat. Imagine arriving in Fukuoka and seeing this tower for the first time.
At 100 meters tall, the Hakata Port Tower may seem modest today. Surrounding buildings have eclipsed it over time. Yet, it retains a unique charm. The Hakata Port Tower has a down-to-earth feel that makes it strangely attractive.
The Hakata Port Tower’s observation deck sits 70 meters above ground. It offers a 360-degree panoramic view. From here, you can see Hakata City and Hakata Port. Watch the ships as they come and go across the sea. The observation deck is free. It is open to the public. You can enter until 7:40 PM and it closes at 8 PM.
At night, the Hakata Port Tower is beautifully lit. The illuminated tower and sea create a special scene. Many people gather here to enjoy the bright colors.
