Established in 1956 Tanjong Katong Secondary School started as Tanjong Katong Secondary Technical School. This school initially accepted only boys. In 1969 Tanjong Katong Secondary School began admitting female students. By 1979 the student population had impressively grown to 5000.
Now I want to tell you more about Tanjong Katong Secondary School’s journey. The school was renamed Tanjong Katong Secondary School in 1993. In 1996 Tanjong Katong Secondary School acquired the premises of Tanjong Katong Girls’ School. Two years later Tanjong Katong Secondary School relocated to its current address on 130 Haig Road. The school moved roughly 550 meters from its original site.
The new campus of Tanjong Katong Secondary School officially opened in 2000. In 2001 Tanjong Katong Secondary School was recognized as one of the Top 20 Value-Added schools. The school achieved a 98% distinction rate in Chemistry for the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Ordinary Level examinations in 2004. That same year Tanjong Katong Secondary School was granted autonomous status.
Tanjong Katong Secondary School also received the School Distinction Award. It became one of the first twelve schools to receive this honor. The school also attained Singapore Quality Class status. This recognized the school’s efficient organization. Tanjong Katong Secondary School’s academic curriculum was celebrated with the Best Practice Award for Teaching and Learning.
The school has a rich culture. Leonardo da Vinci is prominently featured on the Tanjong Katong Secondary School crest. This symbolizes an all-round education. The crest includes a bird and a flying machine. These represent the ambition to exceed the boundaries of traditional education.
The houses at Tanjong Katong Secondary School were named after influential figures. They were Albert Einstein Leonardo da Vinci Rabindranath Tagore and Ernest Rutherford. These houses were represented by red purple blue and yellow. Since 2020 houses are no longer part of the school system.
The Tanjong Katong Band has an interesting story. It combines the bands from Tanjong Katong Technical School and Tanjong Katong Girls’ School. These bands started separately in 1965 with just 26 members. In 1967 they performed together marking a bond. The band split again in 1989. In 1998 the band performed solo at the National Day Parade. It was the first school band to do so.
Many notable people have graduated from Tanjong Katong Secondary School. Lawrence Wong the Prime Minister of Singapore is an alumnus. Other alumni include Jack Neo Kym Ng and Yaacob Ibrahim.
