Hindu Kovil

Is this the energy of a thousand whispered prayers? You might feel it here at the Hindu Kovil in Kandy. This small but significant temple, nestled near the Kandy Police Station, is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. He is one of the most revered deities in the Hindu pantheon. The history of the Hindu Kovil is shrouded in the mists of time, passed down through generations in whispers and stories. Locals believe it to be one of the oldest Kovils in the city, possibly dating back to the Nayakkar dynasty’s rule over the Kandyan Kingdom. A popular story tells of King Sri Vikrama Rajasinha’s washerman. This washerman used the Bahiravakanda watercourse behind the Kovil. Legend says he dreamt of God Iswara, who instructed him to build a temple on the present site. The washerman, following this divine guidance, informed his landlord, who relayed the message to the king. The king, recognizing the importance of the dream, ordered the temple’s construction. Today, the descendants of the Chettiyar family, the landlord who received the washerman’s message, maintain the Hindu Kovil. Each year, after the Esala Buddhist festival’s water-cutting ceremony, a vibrant procession begins at the Hindu Kovil. This procession is a testament to the temple’s enduring importance within the community, a vibrant thread woven into the tapestry of Kandy’s spiritual landscape.
