“Built in a day” they said about Fauntleroy Church. It stands as a testament to community spirit. Welcome to the Fauntleroy Church. It is a landmark in West Seattle’s Fauntleroy/Endolyne neighborhood.

The Fauntleroy Church is also known as the Fauntleroy Community Church. This United Church of Christ has a special story. Its origins trace back to July 25 1908. That’s when the original church was reportedly built in just one day.

Imagine the scene. The community banded together to raise this church. John Adams donated the land. The community provided the labor. James Colman supplied the lumber.

The current complex is more than just the original building. It signifies the growth and evolution of the Fauntleroy Church. It stands as a symbol of faith and unity. The Fauntleroy Church has been providing creative learning experiences. These experiences motivate children, youth, and adults. They explore and deepen their relationship with God. The church examines the intersection of faith with daily living and service.

James Colman’s son Laurence Colman and Dr. Kilbourne were also involved in building the downtown Seattle YMCA. In 1914, they planned and built a gym. It became the Fauntleroy YMCA next to the church. The “Y” and the Fauntleroy Church are a strong part of the community today.

Fauntleroy itself has a rich history. Native Americans valued Fauntleroy Cove long before settlers arrived. In 1841, Lt. Charles Wilkes explored the cove. He named Brace Point and Point Williams. Lt. George Davidson later named the cove after his future father-in-law R. H. Fauntleroy.

Early resident John Adams invested in 300 acres at Fauntleroy. He set up a store. He started promoting a streetcar line. By 1907, the streetcar line was built.

Over the years, the Fauntleroy Church has remained a focal point. It is a place where faith intersects with daily life. It is a place where service to others is a core value. As you stand here, you are surrounded by more than just bricks and mortar. You are surrounded by a legacy of community and faith. The Fauntleroy Church has a long history of uniting people.
