Do you see the serene figure atop the column? That is the Szűz Mária-kegyoszlop Statue. It stands as a testament to faith and resilience.

The Szűz Mária-kegyoszlop Statue has a fascinating history. It was originally erected in 1724. Its first location was Felsővásártér. This is now known as Batthyány tér.

Weisz Anna and several Buda citizens commissioned the Szűz Mária-kegyoszlop Statue. The original design included Sienai Szent Katalin and Nepomuki Szent János. They were side figures.

In 1748, the Szűz Mária-kegyoszlop Statue was moved within the square. However in 1826, the statue group was dismantled. The side figures disappeared. Their fate has been unknown since 1926.

The Szűz Mária-kegyoszlop Statue was relocated in 1834. It was placed in Víziváros at Irma tér. Today this is Mária tér.

Over the years, the Szűz Mária-kegyoszlop Statue has been reconstructed. Lajos Visnyovszky re-carved it in 1938. Péter Szomolányi re-carved it again in 1984.

The area around the Szűz Mária-kegyoszlop Statue has also seen changes. Trees that obscured the statue were removed. The small square was grassed and surrounded by bushes. A new iron grid was installed.

New signs were placed when the Szűz Mária-kegyoszlop Statue was blessed. These signs restored the square’s old name. It was to be known again as Mária-tér. The name Irma-tér was considered incorrect.

In 2003, the Budavár Municipality invested in decorative lighting for the statue. Since then the Szűz Mária-kegyoszlop Statue can be admired from dusk till midnight.

The Szűz Mária-kegyoszlop Statue stands as a symbol. It marks the resilience of faith. It also highlights the dedication to preserving cultural heritage. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Remember its long and storied past.
