Built by Şah Sultan daughter of Yavuz Sultan Selim Merkez Cami stands proudly in Zeytinburnu Istanbul. This mosque is more than just a place of worship. It is a complex. It includes a türbe a çilehane and even a library.

The heart of Merkez Cami beats with history. It was originally constructed for Şeyh Merkez Efendi a renowned religious figure. A green inscription on the courtyard gate reveals construction dates of 1514 and 1580 showing two periods of building or renovation. Later in 1837 Sultan Mahmud II oversaw its renewal.

Step inside Merkez Cami. Note its square plan. The wooden ceiling and minaret with a single balcony are striking features. The building is painted yellow a warm hue reflecting the sun’s glow. The mosque’s courtyard holds a smaller türbe. It houses the sarcophagi of Merkez Efendi’s two grandsons. Across from it lies the main türbe of Merkez Efendi himself. It features a domed ceiling.

More than just a mosque Merkez Cami is part of a larger complex. This includes a çilehane a small structure built over a well. It is said that the çilehane houses the graves of notable figures including Sabahattin Eyüpoğlu and Halide Edip Adıvar. Adjacent is the Abdülbaki Paşa Library once a children’s library. Today this small square hosts medical events. The mosque also has a hamam a school and areas for offerings.

Merkez Efendi’s legacy extends beyond the mosque. Legend speaks of him creating a famous mesir macunu a paste of 41 herbs. It is said he used this to cure Hafsa Valide Sultan. The tradition continues annually with mesir macunu festivals in Manisa.

Leave Merkez Cami with a sense of wonder. It is a testament to Istanbul’s rich history. It showcases the blending of religious devotion and community life. It is a place where history whispers stories of faith healing and tradition.
