Wow look at the Columbus Center. Its towering presence dominates the Bremerhaven skyline. This impressive complex wasn’t always here.

In the 1970s Bremerhaven needed a modern shopping and living space. Architects competed to design it. The ASAD Darmstadt group won. Their design transformed the Bremerhaven waterfront. Construction started in 1975. It opened in 1978. The building’s distinctive design was inspired by ship funnels. Three towers house almost 500 apartments. Below are two levels of parking. Above them lies a shopping center.

The Columbus Center isn’t just about shopping. It’s a significant part of Bremerhaven’s story. Think about it. Radio Bremen even had a regional studio there for years. That moved in 2021. The center also added the Weserpassage in 2011. This expanded the shopping area. It also connected the center to new parking.

Notice the Columbus statue. This bronze statue isn’t the original. The original was melted down during World War I. Luckily a plaster model survived. A copy was placed at its current location in 1978. It’s a testament to perseverance and history.

The Columbus Center also boasts two bridges. The Holländerbrücke opened in 1978. The Glaserne Drehbrücke followed in 2009. They connect the shopping center to the Old Harbour. These bridges create a vital link between the bustling city and the historical harbour.

The Columbus Center is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of Bremerhaven’s dynamic past. It’s also a testament to its future. It is a place where the past meets the present. It is a place where shopping meets history. It is a place worth remembering.
