Records show Store Magleby Skole’s origins date back to 1652. Imagine the children then. Their lessons took place in a building on Kirkevej 6. It served as the school for nearly two centuries. That’s Store Magleby Skole for you. A testament to time.

This wasn’t the only location for Store Magleby Skole. A smaller school existed at the corner of Hovedgaden and Skolegade. The building still bears the name “Skolebo”. It hints at the rich history held within these walls. The school’s legacy stretches far.

After 1900 an annex school opened at Store Magleby Fælled. By the 1920s the school system had expanded across the town. Children attended lessons in many locations. The growing student population necessitated a new school building.

Architect Kaj Grøning designed a new yellow brick structure. It stands proudly on Kirkevej. Today it is known as “the old school”. Later additions included a wall facing the road and parking spaces.

The new school building rendered the old one by the church obsolete. Headmaster Nørsted moved in 1927. The new school boasted ample classrooms a gymnasium a workshop and a teacher’s residence.

In 1958 Store Magleby Skole transitioned from village to town status. The school head became known as the school inspector. The town experienced rapid growth. Student numbers soared. Fifteen years later Kaj Grøning’s son Paul Grøning another architect expanded the school. This ensured his father’s original building remained intact.

Further expansions added specialist rooms and a multi-purpose hall. Store Magleby Skole stands as a landmark of continuous growth and adaptation. It’s a place where generations learned and played. It remains a vital part of the community. The story of Store Magleby Skole is a rich tapestry woven through time. A story you can almost feel breathing within these very walls.
