In 1957, Tai Seng Christian Church started humbly. It began as a gospel outreach in a Lorong Tai Seng shop house. The Christian Nationals Evangelism Commission recognized the neighborhood’s need. It was known for gang activity then.
Music drew people in. Sister Zhong Yi’s music attracted people from Tai Seng. These evangelistic gatherings marked the church’s beginning.
The church relocated in 1979. Lorong Tai Seng was acquired for industrial development. The church moved to a borrowed bungalow on Brighton Avenue.
In 1988, Tai Seng Christian Church found a permanent home. It acquired a building on Yio Chu Kang Road. This building was previously the Yio Chu Kang Gospel Hall.
But there is even more history here. Before Tai Seng Christian Church, the building belonged to Yio Chu Kang Gospel Hall. Chew Puat Chwee, a Chinese businessman, founded it.
Chew Puat Chwee was a Hokkien migrant. He converted to Christianity. His business, Chop Hong Lee, brought him wealth. He used it for philanthropic work starting in 1918. Chew co-founded the Chinese-medium Kong Yiong School. He also became a successful landowner. He owned shophouses and attap houses in Chia Keng Village.
Chew built the Yio Chu Kang Gospel Hall in 1930. It was a Brethren Church. During the Japanese Occupation, Chew protected his community. He offered soldiers food and shelter. In return, they left Chia Keng Village unharmed.
After the war, the main street was named Lorong Hong Lee. This commemorated Chew’s business.
Chew dedicated more time to church activities. He preached in Mandarin. In the late 1980s, his properties were sold. Despite this, his legacy endured. A new road was named Hong Lee Place.
The Yio Chu Kang Gospel Hall moved in 1978. It relocated to Poh Huat Road.
Tai Seng Christian Church took over the building in 1989.
Today, the Tai Seng Christian Church building has a double-pitched roof. It is a blue and white single-story building. Its design reflects classical architecture. The building adapts to Singapore’s tropical weather. It has large overhangs for shelter. Tall ceilings and windows provide ventilation.
As of 2020, Tai Seng Christian Church holds weekly bilingual services. It also hosts community-building events.
