Hidden amongst Recoleta’s elegant avenues lies Plaza Ramón J. Cárcano. This isn’t just any park. It’s a slice of Buenos Aires history. Named in 1967 it honors Ramón José Cárcano a prominent conservative politician. He even served as governor of Córdoba province. Initially its boundaries were rather vague. An ordinance three months later clarified them. Interestingly it originally included what is now Plaza Juan XXIII. Their separation happened in 1975.

Plaza Ramón J. Cárcano sits nestled amongst other significant plazas. To the southwest you’ll find Plaza Juan XXIII. West is Plaza Intendente Alvear. To the northeast lies Plaza San Martín de Tours. Calle Ortiz forms its eastern edge a pedestrian walkway connecting Avenidas Alvear and Quintana.

The plaza holds a surprising secret. At the southwest corner where Quintana and Haedo streets meet stands a marble sculpture. Erected in 1918 it commemorates Ramón Falcón. He was the Chief of Police known for his harsh methods. The sculpture’s figures represent Falcón and his aide Juan Alberto Lartigau. Both victims of an assassination by anarchist Simón Radowitzky in 1909. The figures represent ‘Fatalidad’ and ‘Gloria’ a powerful visual reminder of a turbulent past. This seemingly unassuming park holds layers of history. It’s a quiet witness to the changing landscape of Buenos Aires. A place to reflect on the city’s past and present. So take a moment to appreciate this small but significant part of Recoleta. Enjoy its tranquility. Reflect on the stories etched into its very stones.
