Gazing upon Rosenborg Castle, one can almost hear the echoes of King Christian IV’s laughter. Rosenborg Castle stands as a magnificent testament to his reign. It started as a small summer palace in 1606. Over 28 years, it blossomed into the grand Renaissance castle we see today, completed in 1633. Rosenborg Castle quickly became Christian IV’s favorite residence. He loved it so much that he requested to spend his final days there. He was even transported by sleigh from Frederiksborg to Rosenborg Castle on his deathbed. The castle’s red brick walls, sandstone ornamentation, and towering spires showcase the Dutch Renaissance style, popular in Denmark during that era. Rosenborg Castle served as a royal residence until 1710. Then Frederik IV, Christian IV’s great-grandchild, opted for more modern summer homes. He transformed Rosenborg Castle into a home for the royal collections. It was only used twice more as a royal residence, both during emergencies. The first was after a fire at Christiansborg in 1794. The second was during the English attack on Copenhagen in 1801. In 1838, Rosenborg Castle opened its doors to the public as a museum. Today, Rosenborg Castle invites you to step back in time. Explore the opulent rooms filled with royal portraits and treasures. Descend into the treasury to marvel at the dazzling Danish Crown Jewels. The Knights’ Hall, with its silver lions guarding the coronation thrones, is a sight to behold. The castle also houses an impressive collection of Venetian glass and Flora Danica. As you wander through the King’s Garden surrounding the castle, remember the legacy of Christian IV. His spirit lives on within the walls of Rosenborg Castle, a true gem of Copenhagen.
