“Moved to Broadview” a triumphant headline could have proclaimed. Here stands the Broadview Missionary Baptist Church. It is a beacon of faith and community in Broadview. The church’s story is one of growth, resilience, and unwavering commitment.
Broadview Missionary Baptist Chapel started as a Southern Baptist Mission. This was on July 4, 1969. Rev. Otis Anderson led it. The mission began at 2001 South 15th Avenue. This property belonged to the Chicago Metropolitan Baptist Association.
In January 1972, Rev. Anderson resigned. However, the mission persevered.
Rev. Clarence W. Hopson became the spiritual leader on May 7, 1972. The congregation had about forty members then. Most were women and children.
The church officially formed in June 1972.
Under Pastor Hopson, the church grew significantly. In 1974, it bought the property at 2001 S. 15th Avenue. The church continued to grow. Planning for the growing membership became essential.
The church building was remodeled in 1977. Membership was approaching three hundred. Space became a concern. Leaders started exploring options.
On March 30, 1980, the church moved to 2111 S. 17th Avenue. The membership was nearly four hundred. Within a few years, it exceeded two thousand. Plans began to address overcrowding.
After years of prayer and overcoming legal challenges, the Broadview Missionary Baptist Church moved again. This was on November 13, 2004. Their current location is 2100 South 25th Avenue. This facility features a sanctuary with 2200 seats. It also has a fellowship hall for 450 people. Fifteen classrooms and many offices are included. The Christian Education department offers over fifteen classes each quarter. In its first 25 years, it taught 5033 students. The church also has fifteen ministries. It sponsored two new churches during that time.
After 35 years of service, Pastor Clarence W. Hopson retired on May 27, 2007. He announced his retirement on April 27, 2006.
Rev. Marvin G. Parker was elected pastor on October 27, 2006. His installation was on May 27, 2007. He built upon the foundation laid by Pastor Emeritus Hopson.
Under Pastor Parker, the church focused on missions. This included local, national, and international efforts. The Christian Education department refocused on foundational doctrines.
Pastor Marvin G. Parker appointed Reverend Eric Arnall as the Mission’s Pastor. Rev. Arnall developed a Missions 101 Training Class Curriculum. He organized the Missions Ministry based on Acts 1:8.
In 2008, Reverend Robert Walker, Sr. replaced Rev. Arnall. He developed a program to involve the entire church in missionary work.
In 2018, Pastor Marvin G. Parker retired. Assistant Pastor Christopher Robinson became Interim Pastor.
During Interim Pastor Robinson’s leadership, the COVID-19 pandemic began. The church closed for in-person services. Interim Pastor Robinson and the church leadership developed initiatives. They ensured the church remained a viable part of the Broadview community. Worship services went online. Christian Education teachers started online classes. Weekly prayer meetings were held online.
The search for a new pastor began in April 2019.
In October 2022, Rev. Jasper Paul Taylor I was chosen as the new pastor. Pastor Taylor began on January 1, 2023. He started a new chapter in the Broadview Missionary Baptist Church history.
The Sollitt Construction Company completed the current two-story building in 2004. Harding Partners were the architects. The lobby around the main sanctuary features terrazzo flooring. Its curved pattern mirrors the sanctuary’s shape. A suspended pedestrian bridge crosses the two-story narthex on the second floor. The sanctuary is crowned by a 150-foot dome. It soars 60 feet above the main floor.
The Broadview Missionary Baptist Church continues to evolve. It remains a spiritual home for many. Its mission extends far beyond its walls. The church actively engages with the community. It offers worship services. These services are held on Sundays at 11:00 a.m. There are also Wednesday evening services in person and online.
