Whispers of “Garuda” drift on the wind. Here we stand before Gedung Garuda, a silent giant on Jalan Gunung Sahari. Gedung Garuda isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in steel and glass, a testament to Indonesia’s national airline. This eight-story structure, completed in 1996, once buzzed with activity. It served as one of Garuda Indonesia’s three main operational hubs, alongside Soekarno-Hatta Airport and the Medan Merdeka Selatan office.

For almost a decade, Garuda Indonesia operated from the prestigious Wisma Dharmala Sakti. They finally moved into their new home, Gedung Garuda, in mid-1996. The official opening ceremony, led by Garuda Indonesia’s director Soepandi, took place on August 8, 1996. Initially, the building was part of a build-operate-transfer agreement between Garuda Indonesia and a private company. This approximately 8,000 square meter building, formerly known as Graha Sejahtera, became fully owned by Garuda Indonesia in 2004, managed by its subsidiary, PT Garuda Karya Mandiri. Interestingly, the names of the architects and contractors behind Gedung Garuda remain a mystery, lost to time.

Gedung Garuda stands as a proud symbol of Indonesia’s aviation history. A journey from a leased space to a fully owned symbol of national pride. A quiet sentinel watching over the bustling streets of Jakarta.
