Slipping through time, imagine yourself back in the bustling days of the Jockgrimer Tongruben, not as a tranquil nature reserve, but as a site of industrious activity. The Jockgrimer Tongruben, once a hive of mining operations, echoed with the sounds of pickaxes against clay and the rumble of carts hauling their earthy bounty. This area, now a haven for rare plants and animals, was significantly altered by human hands. Clay extraction was the main focus, shaping the very landscape we see today. Later, until the late 1980s, sand mining continued, further transforming the terrain. It’s remarkable how nature reclaims its territory. The pits left behind from these activities have become idyllic ponds, providing a habitat for endangered species. The surrounding area, primarily a beech forest, stands as a testament to nature’s resilience, flourishing at the edge of an ancient Rhine valley. This protected area, established in 1990, encompasses around 51 hectares. It is located southwest of Jockgrim and is traversed by the Schmerbach stream. The Jockgrimer Tongruben’s main purpose is to safeguard the diverse plant and animal life that thrives within its unique ecosystem. Open water surfaces, shallow water zones, sandy areas, pockets of mature trees, and marshy meadows characterize this sanctuary. The Jockgrimer Tongruben stands not just as a testament to nature’s power but also as a reminder of the human impact on the landscape.
