“Most visitors assume the symbiotic relationship is a happy and attractive accident”. This quote perfectly encapsulates the allure of St Gabriel’s in Pimlico. St Gabriel’s stands as a testament to Victorian philanthropy and architectural vision.

We are standing in front of St Gabriel’s Church. It is a Grade II listed building. It graces one of London’s most elegant garden squares. St Gabriel’s isn’t just a church. It’s a landmark.

Let’s delve into the story of this remarkable place. St Gabriel’s was built in 1853. Thomas Cundy, Surveyor of the Grosvenor Estates, designed it. These estates belonged to the Duke of Westminster. Today they cover Belgravia and Pimlico. The church can hold around 300 people. It is famed for its acoustics.

The land where St Gabriel’s stands has an interesting past. Originally, this area was part of the Parish of St George, Hanover Square. It was largely marshy and of minimal interest to developers. That changed in the 1820s. The Marquess of Westminster leased the land to Thomas Cubitt. Cubitt was Queen Victoria’s favorite builder. He transformed the area into a residential hub.

The current parish of St Gabriel’s was created in 1850. The second Marquess of Westminster donated the land to build a church. This was a substantial improvement. The previous occupant was a retired highwayman. He kept two bears and enjoyed cock-fighting.

Thomas Cundy II designed St Gabriel’s in the Decorated Gothic style. Samuel Cundy, the family sculptor, provided the Bath stone font. The church cost its parishioners 9360 pounds. The Marquess generously donated 5000 pounds. The church was consecrated on 12 May 1852 by the Bishop of London.

Over the years, St Gabriel’s has seen several modifications. The original spire was rebuilt in 1887-8. A choir vestry was also added. In 1896-7, a splendid East Window was added. C.E. Kempe designed it. Also added were Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee North and South side aisles and a Lady Chapel.

The church miraculously survived some light bombing in 1917. It also survived a hail of bombs in 1940/41. A parachute mine destroyed 150 houses nearby. The Lady Chapel was destroyed in April 1941.

Today, St Gabriel’s continues to be a vibrant place of worship. Morning worship services are held every Sunday. Services are both in-person and online. They include streamed worship, bible teaching, and community stories.

Notice how the mature trees in Warwick Square frame the view towards St Gabriel’s. The Victorian landscape designers had a clear vision. They wanted to link the garden and the church. The tranquil illusion of Rus in Urbe or The Country in the City still exists today.

St Gabriel’s stands as a testament to faith, architecture, and community. Its history is interwoven with the development of Pimlico. Its beauty is enhanced by its surroundings. It offers a unique glimpse into London’s Victorian past.
