“A general’s legacy echoes here” whispers the wind down Allée Achille de Thomassin. This unassuming alley holds a remarkable story. It’s named after General François Achille Thomassin a prominent figure in 19th-century France. Born in Metz a city then considered impregnable young Thomassin followed in the footsteps of his glorious ancestors. He joined the prestigious Saint-Cyr military academy in 1845.

His career took him to Algeria. He spent nearly 22 years there. This was during the French colonization of Algeria. He participated actively in pacifying the region. Thomassin’s dedication earned him promotions. He rose through the ranks to become a General of Division.

His achievements extended beyond Algeria. He played a significant role in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. His regiment fought bravely at Frœschwiller. Unfortunately he was captured. Later he was released and promoted to Colonel. He even served on the war council judging leaders of the Marseilles insurrection.

Thomassin’s military career continued into the Third Republic. He held several important commands including the command of the Oran division and the 4th Army Corps. He was even a member of the Supreme War Council. His exemplary service earned him the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour. He was also awarded the Colonial Medal with the “Algeria” clasp.

Thomassin’s story reflects the ambitions and realities of French military expansion in the 19th century. His life is a testament to courage dedication and a legacy that continues to resonate even in the quiet Parisian alley that bears his name.
