Can you imagine a church that started as a small gathering of Irish families and grew into one of the largest churches in Chicago? It all began in 1886 with the Visitation Catholic Church. Standing proudly on the corner Garfield Blvd and Peoria street, Visitation was a beacon of faith and community. The church was originally organized as a predominantly Irish parish on the south side of Chicago, a neighborhood now known as Englewood/Back of the Yards.

Visitation’s journey was not without its challenges. The church moved locations three times to accommodate its growing congregation. The current building, dedicated in 1899, was a testament to the parish’s enduring spirit. With its medieval gothic architecture, it served as a place of worship for thousands of parishioners. Visitation Catholic School was a symbol of the church’s commitment to education. In 1925, it boasted the second-largest enrollment among Chicago Catholic parishes.

In 1990, Visitation merged with nearby St. Basil Church. Despite the changes over the years, Visitation Catholic Church continues to be a vital presence in the Englewood neighborhood. Today, it serves a diverse community made up of Black and Hispanic families. The church’s original identity as a thriving Irish parish has been woven into the rich tapestry of Chicago’s history. The legacy of Visitation Catholic Church echoes through the generations, reminding us of the enduring power of faith, community, and resilience.
