A decree in the “Gazeta de Lisboa” marked its beginning. That was on April 7th, 1830. Today we stand before the Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária da Universidade de Lisboa. This faculty wasn’t always known by its current name.
King D. Miguel created it. He called it the Royal School of Veterinary. The Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária holds the distinction of being Portugal’s first veterinary school. It is the oldest institution for veterinary science education in the country.
For a time veterinary studies merged with agronomy. From 1852 to 1910 the two fields were joined. Later in 1918 the school became part of the university system. It was renamed High School of Veterinary Medicine.
The year 1930 saw more changes. The High School of Veterinary Medicine joined four other schools. Together they formed the Technical University of Lisbon. Finally on August 1 1989 the school received its present name. It became the Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária FMV.
More recently in 2013 the University of Lisbon merged with the Technical University of Lisbon. As a result the FMV became part of the University of Lisbon. It is now one of the university’s eighteen organic units.
