Slipping through time, imagine Lyon in 1680. The Rue Tavernier already existed, a thread in the city’s vibrant tapestry. Rue Tavernier begins at Quai Saint-Vincent. It stretches to Rue Bouteille. It stands in the Saint-Vincent quarter of Lyon’s 1st arrondissement. Rue Tavernier’s name remains a mystery. It may honor a landowner who provided the land for the street’s creation. But before it was Rue Tavernier, it was known as Rue Delorme. This earlier name commemorated Philibert Delorme. He was an architect believed to have had a workshop on this very street. Philibert Delorme lived from 1514 to 1570. He played a part in the street’s history. Today, Rue Tavernier is a one-way street. It flows with the direction of the building numbers. Imagine the flow of life, the clatter of carriages, the whispers of secrets along this historic route. The buildings, a mix of 18th and 19th-century architecture, whisper stories of the past. Notice the blend of architectural styles. Near the Quai, taller buildings dominate, reaching three to five stories high. Further down, structures appear older, with ornate stone window frames. At number 5, a statue of the Virgin Mary watches over the street. Across the way, number 12 boasts a beautiful facade, its exterior stairway a striking detail. At number 7, a series of arches marks the corner where Rue Tavernier meets Rue de la Vieille. Close by, the Mosaic Café offers a haven. Its focus is on welcoming those who find themselves isolated. Here, amidst the echoes of history, Rue Tavernier continues to weave its story into the heart of Lyon.
