“Moss-covered boulders. That’s what greets you at Shiprock Falls.” These falls offer a tranquil escape not far from Melbourne. Shiprock Falls is in Kurth Kiln Regional Park. This park is known for its history and natural beauty.
Shiprock Falls itself is a noisy cascade. Water tumbles over large boulders. The falls are partly obscured but still impressive. A viewing platform offers a safe glimpse of the falls from the side. For a closer look some take a track down to the creek. Be warned this track is eroding and steep.
Up close the Shiprock Falls is vivid. White water contrasts with bright green moss. The surrounding forest adds to the scene. Dark wet rocks line the creek.
The giant Ship Rock is a main attraction here. You will pass the Ship Rock on the way to the falls. The rock is around 5 to 10 meters high. A cave runs through it. It is more of a rock shelter. Light streams in from both ends. Exploring it is quite fun.
Shiprock Falls is part of McCrae Creek. Though named Shiprock Falls the reason for its name remains a mystery. The rock itself has a presence. Climbers and boulderers frequent it. Anchors are attached up high.
The geology here is also noteworthy. Granite forms much of the rock. Look for quartz veins within the granite. These veins are crystallized minerals. They formed from mineral-rich solutions. Hydrothermal circulation played a role. This involves hot water circulating through the rock.
Shiprock Falls makes a neat addition to a day trip. It is a nature escape close to Melbourne’s outer eastern suburbs. Winter and spring are great times to visit Shiprock Falls. The falls are fiercest then. Visit in the late afternoon for better light.
Back at the car park you’ll find facilities. There are toilets picnic tables and a fire pit. Dogs are allowed on leash. Remember fires must be in designated fireplaces. The managing authority is Parks Victoria.
For even better facilities head towards Gembrook. The Kurth Kiln Picnic Ground is a few kilometers away. It offers more open space. Several bushwalks start from there. So, breathe deeply. Listen to the water. Explore the rocks and forest. Shiprock Falls offers a refreshing break.
