A simple stone structure stands before you. This is the Birrekovener Kapelle. Its unassuming exterior belies a rich history. Three times this chapel has been built. Each construction reflects the evolving needs and faith of the Birrekoven community.
The Birrekovener Kapelle’s story begins long before its current form. In the early 18th century the plague ravaged Alfter. The people of Birrekoven made a vow. If spared from the pestilence they would build a magnificent cross. This vow led to the erection of a “Chreutz zu Ehren der schmerzhaften Mutter Gottes” on March 1 1710. This cross served as a focal point for outdoor devotions. Its weathered inscription speaks of faith and supplication. It still stands today within the Birrekovener Kapelle behind the altar.
The wooden cross wasn’t enough for long. By 1713 the villagers yearned for a more permanent place of worship. A small wooden chapel was built. It was dedicated to “Maria Opferung”. This first chapel was a shared space for prayer and thanksgiving. Anna Junkersdorf generously donated 100 thalers in 1720 to illuminate the humble chapel.
The first Birrekovener Kapelle proved too small. In 1876 it was replaced with a sturdier stone structure. However it wasn’t until 1913 that the Alfter priest Karl Unkel was given permission to hold Mass there. Even this stone chapel became insufficient. As Birrekoven’s population grew it became too cramped.
This led to the formation of the Kapellenbauverein in 1954. Under Alfred Krupp’s leadership they raised funds for a third chapel. The architect Egon Winkens of Bonn designed a simple building that could accommodate 50 worshippers a significant increase from the previous 12. This third chapel the one you see now was completed in 1956. Its dedication was marked by a large procession and a celebratory Mass attended by numerous dignitaries.
Since then the Birrekovener Kapelle has continued to serve its community. It has faced challenges like significant water damage in 1968. This was repaired at a substantial cost. A new Marian well was built adding to its charm. The chapel has also benefited from enhancements like a new Stations of the Cross in 1976. This features beautiful bronze reliefs. Even window replacements in 2006 were funded by the local hunting association. The Birrekovener Kapelle continues to stand as a testament to the unwavering faith of its community a place of prayer and reflection. Its history continues to unfold. It will surely hold further significance for future generations.
