Imagine a school where scientific breakthroughs meet a nurturing learning environment. That place is Percy Julian Middle School. This school stands as a testament to both academic excellence and community spirit in Oak Park.

Percy Julian Middle School began its journey long ago. The original building was erected in 1901. It was first known as 64th Street School. Later it became Hawthorne School. In the 1980s it received its current name honoring a remarkable man. The new school structure opened in September 2002.

Who was Percy Lavon Julian? Born in 1899 in Alabama, Julian overcame many obstacles to become a pioneering chemist. He made groundbreaking contributions to science. Julian found ways to create chemicals in the lab that were previously only available from nature. His work revolutionized the treatment of various conditions. His research led to improved treatments for some forms of cancer. It also helped with pregnancy disorders.

One of Julian’s most significant achievements was his work with cortisone. Cortisone is a medication used to relieve arthritis pain. Julian’s methods made it less expensive to manufacture. This made it more accessible to those who needed it. Percy Julian passed away in Chicago in 1975.

Percy Julian Middle School embraces the concept of middle school education. It serves as a bridge. It helps students transition smoothly from elementary to high school. The school offers a unique environment. Here children develop into responsible citizens and lifelong learners. It prepares them for the challenges of high school. Oak Park chose this model as an alternative to the junior high system. The junior high system often functions as a mini high school.

Percy Julian Middle School is more than just a school building. It is a place where young minds grow. It is a place where they develop positive identities. It is a place where they prepare for the future inspired by the legacy of Percy Lavon Julian.
