But did you know that this cultural haven was once a leather factory? Yes, this 62000 square-foot building was transformed. Millions of pounds were spent to create Rich Mix. It became East London’s Independent Arts Venue.
Inside Rich Mix, you will find a three-screen cinema. It shows both mainstream and independent films. There are also many flexible performance spaces. Emerging and established artists are welcome here. They can rehearse and perform.
Rich Mix is not just about performances. It also houses over 20 creative organizations. These businesses employ more than 320 people. They contribute over 23000000 pounds per year to the economy.

In 2023-24, Rich Mix welcomed almost 115000 audience members. It worked with over 940 artists and creatives. Over 3000 cinema screenings were held. Rich Mix’s story has a complex past. In 1999, Tower Hamlets council envisioned it as an arts centre. The aim was to celebrate migrant communities. In 2001, it was officially incorporated.
The project cost 26 million pounds. Funding came from various public and private bodies. These included the Arts Council England and the Millennium Commission.
However, Rich Mix faced early financial troubles. In 2003, cost overruns led to further investment. A council report described the early years as a struggle to survive. There were disputes over loans and grants.
In 2015, the future of Rich Mix was uncertain. But the new mayor discontinued litigation. He agreed to settle a dispute out of court. He gave Rich Mix 1.5 million pounds. This allowed it to repay a debt.
