A red brick church stands before you. This is Nazaret Kirke a testament to faith and community in Copenhagen’s Østerbro district. Nazaret Kirke wasn’t always here. The area grew rapidly in the late 1800s. St John’s Church became overcrowded. A young catechist held open-air services. This led to the formation of a church society. They aimed to build a church in the bustling Ryesgade neighborhood. A temporary church was built in 1892. It was financed by the Copenhagen Church Foundation.

The dream of a permanent Nazaret Kirke took shape in 1897. A committee was formed to raise funds. Architect Victor Nyebølle designed the church. This was his first project in Copenhagen. The temporary church was moved. It found a new home on Sjællandsgade in Nørrebro. The foundation stone for Nazaret Kirke was laid on May 8 1902. The grand opening was also on May 8 1904.

Nazaret Kirke’s design is inspired by Northern Italian Romanesque churches. It is built from red brick and stands on granite. The facade facing the street features a gable. A tall tower stands to the right. A shorter pinnacle is on the left. A relief with biblical scenes adorns the facade. It was created by Thomas Bærentzen. A Christ figure sits above the entrance.

In 1905 Nazaret Kirke’s parish was divided. The Church of Peace was completed down the street. Nazaret Kirke remains a vibrant part of Østerbro’s history. It is a place of worship and community. It bears witness to the area’s growth and the enduring power of faith. It’s a stunning building. Its red bricks tell a story of dedication. A story of growth and the people of Østerbro. Nazaret Kirke stands as a symbol of hope and resilience. It continues to serve the community.
