Could you imagine a church rising from ashes? That’s the story of the Apostelkirche in Bonn. We stand before a testament to faith and resilience. This is a place where history and hope intertwine.

Let’s delve into the tale of the Apostelkirche. It’s more than just a building. It embodies the spirit of Bonn itself. It stands as a beacon of faith in the city.

Bonn, a city with roots stretching back to Roman times, has seen its share of trials. The Apostelkirche shares in this history. Bonn served as the capital of West Germany. It played a pivotal role in the nation’s post-war recovery.

However, rewind to Gutersloh in North Rhine-Westphalia. Here stands another Apostelkirche. It holds the distinction of being the town’s oldest church building. This Apostelkirche was declared a listed building in 1984. This church marks the centre of the former church village. This village was the nucleus of the later town of Gutersloh. Imagine a wooden chapel standing here around 800 AD. The first stone church was built in 1201. A few wall remains are still preserved in the tower of today’s church. The rest burned down at the beginning of the 16th century.

The Apostelkirche in Gutersloh was used as a simultaneous church. This lasted from 1655 to 1890. Both Protestant and Catholic faithful shared the space. This arrangement ended with the inauguration of the Catholic Church of St. Pankratius. The present-day Apostelkirche bore the name St. Pankratius until then.

Tragedy struck on a Sunday in 1944. Bombs largely destroyed the three-nave hall church. Many citizens seeking shelter within its walls perished. Heinz Beck captured this devastation in a painting. You can still view this artwork in the church.

Reconstruction began in 1951. Werner March, also the architect of Berlin’s Olympiastadion, designed the new building. A pointed, arched, barrel-vaulted hall church emerged. It offered seating for approximately 400 people. Four corner columns with late Romanesque leaf capitals were reused. These came from the destroyed choir. A chandelier from 1743 graces the tower hall. Willy Meller created a sculpture in 1955. It commemorates the victims of the Second World War.

In 2012, the Apostelkirche celebrated the 60th anniversary of its reconstruction. It received a new interior painting and a modern lighting system. This marked a new chapter in its story.
