True Church of God in Christ

Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Dallas, Texas, stands the True Church of God in Christ. It’s a beacon of faith. It’s a testament to the enduring power of belief. The story of the True Church of God in Christ begins not in Dallas, but in the heart of Georgia. In 1945, Bishop W. L. Lucas, after 21 years with the Apostolic Holy Church, felt a divine calling to reorganize. Unable to find common ground with his brethren, he embarked on a new path. He founded the True Church of God in Christ. The first assembly took place in Thomasville, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, in September 1947. This marked the official organization of the True Church of God in Christ, Inc. The church’s roots in Georgia run deep. Bishop W.F. Lucas, son of the founder, established the True Followers of Christ in 1951. This later became Lucas Temple True Church of God in Christ. From humble beginnings, holding bible classes in his home and preaching house-to-house, Bishop W.F. Lucas saw his ministry grow. He held services in a small tent pitched next to the present sanctuary in Scottdale, Georgia. A pivotal moment in the church’s history occurred during a tent service. Bishop Lucas performed his first baptism in the name of Jesus Christ in a dammed-up creek. Fourteen souls were baptized that day, marking a significant milestone for the burgeoning church. The congregation raised funds to build a proper structure. They occupied the basement in 1953 and the completed upper sanctuary in 1954. Under Bishop Lucas’ leadership, the church underwent several expansions to accommodate its growing membership. The A. B. Lucas Dining Hall and a balcony were added. Bishop Lucas had a vision of multitudes joining the True Church family. However, he passed away in March 1994 before his vision fully materialized. The mantle of leadership passed to Elder B. J. Lawson, who became the new General Overseer and Presiding Bishop. The church continued to grow, requiring further expansion. Tragedy struck in September 1998 when a fire destroyed the nearly completed new sanctuary. Undeterred, the congregation held services at Robert Shaw Elementary School and later in the dining hall. With renewed determination, reconstruction began, culminating in the dedication of the new building in November 2001. The True Church of God in Christ has a rich history of faith, perseverance, and growth. From its origins in Georgia to its presence in Dallas, it continues to serve as a spiritual home for its members.
