Founded in 2001 San Francisco Friends School is a testament to the power of community. It began as a dream shared by Cathy Hunter and a group of parents. They envisioned a school rooted in Quaker values. These values emphasize reflection integrity peaceful problem-solving and stewardship. The school’s first class of kindergartners the Pioneer Class of 2011 started their journey in 2002 at 117 Diamond Street.
The school’s early years were marked by growth and resilience. In 2005 San Francisco Friends School acquired its current home at 250 Valencia Street. This building had a rich history. It was once a Levi Strauss factory rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake. The transformation of this historic space into a vibrant learning environment was remarkable. It involved a substantial fundraising effort called the Light the Way capital campaign. The school reopened at its new location in 2008.
The renovation carefully preserved many of the building’s original industrial elements. This reflects the school’s commitment to preserving history while embracing innovation. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was a momentous occasion. Robert D Haas Chairman Emeritus of Levi Strauss & Co gave a memorable speech.
Over the years San Francisco Friends School has continued to expand. In 2013 the third floor was completed. This added art studios music rooms a black box theater and a full-size gym. The Horizons at San Francisco Friends School program was launched in 2014. This summer program serves low-income public school students in the Mission District. It addresses the summer learning loss that disproportionately affects children from low-income families. The program provides academic enrichment activities and nutritious meals.
The school’s commitment to community extends beyond its walls. Students participate in service projects. They deliver homemade bread to Glide and volunteer at the Gubbio Project.
