The cornerstone rests here. A simple stone yet it holds the weight of a community’s dreams. This is the Christ-König-Kirche in Bonn-Holzlar. Its story began not in grand pronouncements but in the quiet determination of a village.
In 1925 a dream stirred. Holzlar needed its own church. The idea was bold. Money was scarce. The dream stalled. Then in 1951 the villagers revived the initiative. A working group formed Reinold Hagen a prominent figure led the charge. His brother Hermann designed the building. He also oversaw its construction.
The construction of the Christ-König-Kirche began on June 20 1952. Schoolchildren even helped excavating the ground. On June 28 1953 Dechant Rösgen laid the foundation stone. Imagine the excitement. The church was completed that same year. The first mass was celebrated on December 13 1953. The official consecration happened on April 19 1954.
The Christ-König-Kirche wasn’t just built of bricks and mortar. It was built of faith. Pastor Kurt Padberg shaped the church’s life from 1979 to 2010. He fostered spiritual life. He built a vibrant community. He supported youth work and outreach programs. This spirit lives on.
In 2000 a new addition was completed. It includes a prayer room a classroom and a dance studio. Colorful windows were added in 2008. These additions reflect the evolving needs of the community.
The Christ-König-Kirche’s history intertwines with the history of Holzlar. Its bells ring out across the village. They echo the faith hope and love of generations. The four bells Christ-König Maria Margareta and Antonius were blessed on December 6. Their tones create the opening notes of the well-known hymn Christ ist erstanden. Each bell has its sponsors reflecting the unity of the community.
Even a weathered wooden cross adds to the story. The “Boomskrök” a wayside cross from 1816 tells a silent tale. It was moved multiple times. It was damaged in a traffic accident. The villagers salvaged its remains. They gave them to the church. It’s a reminder of the church’s enduring presence.
