In a city known for its historic churches, the Bellfield Community Hub stands out. You might be surprised to learn that this vibrant hub was once a church. The Bellfield Community Hub began its life as the Portobello Old Parish Church. This grand Georgian church, with its classical design, has graced Bellfield Street since 1810. Picture Edinburgh in the early 1800s. The people of Portobello needed their own place of worship. They negotiated with Duddingston Parish Church, and a new chapel of ease was built. This chapel became the heart of the community, eventually transforming into the Bellfield Community Hub we see today. The building itself has seen many changes over the years. It was extended in 1815 and again in 1878. A clock tower was added in 1839. Despite these changes, the Bellfield Community Hub has retained much of its original charm. Inside, you can still see the beautiful stained-glass windows, the intricate plasterwork, and the carved wood panels. In 2017, the community came together to save this beloved landmark. They successfully campaigned for a community buyout, ensuring that the Bellfield Community Hub would remain a vital part of Portobello for years to come. Today, the Bellfield Community Hub is a testament to the power of community spirit. It’s a place where people from all walks of life come together to learn, create, and celebrate.
