Once a bustling industrial carpentry workshop the Carpintarias de São Lázaro thrived for decades. It was a place of creation. Skilled hands shaped wood into furniture. But like a phoenix from the ashes it rose again.
In 2014 Lisbon’s City Council had a vision. They saw the potential not just for rebuilding but for transformation. A public tender led to the creation of the Cultural and Recreational Association of Carpintarias de São Lázaro. The association breathed new life into the building. They meticulously restored the Art Deco facade. The large windows facing Rua de São Lázaro once again let in the Lisbon sun. More than that they uncovered the hidden potential within.
This wasn’t a simple restoration. The fire damage was extensive. Structural reinforcement using innovative materials was needed. Incredibly the reinforcement was not hidden. It became an integral part of the building’s design. A testament to both the destruction and the rebirth. A striking contrast of old and new.
Today the Carpintarias de São Lázaro is a vibrant cultural center. It houses exhibitions. It plays host to theater performances music concerts and even gastronomic events. It’s a multi-faceted space.
