Across the rushing Rangitopuni Stream stands the Mill Flat Road Bridge, a vital link for the Riverhead community. This isn’t the original bridge. That bridge, sadly, met its end during the devastating floods of January 2023. Imagine the force of the water, debris-filled and overflowing, sweeping away the structure that connected Mill Flat Road and Coatesville-Riverhead Highway. Two hundred residents were suddenly cut off, their daily routines disrupted. Their only alternative was a treacherous 30-minute detour through the Riverhead Forest, navigable only by sturdy 4×4 vehicles. But the community’s isolation was short-lived. Within just six days, a new bridge emerged. This replacement Mill Flat Road Bridge is a Bailey bridge, a type of portable, pre-fabricated truss bridge traditionally employed by armed forces for swift waterway crossings. This one was ordered through Waka Kotahi and transported from Hastings within 24 hours. Picture this: a team of ten skilled workers from Downer, assembling 2,278 pieces of steel, countless bolts, and truckloads of wooden planks. A bridge weighing 80 tonnes rose from the remnants of the flood, a testament to human resilience. This single-lane Mill Flat Road Bailey bridge, though temporary, is even stronger than its predecessor. It served as a lifeline until a permanent structure, impervious to future flooding, could be designed and constructed. The Mill Flat Road Bridge stands as a symbol of community spirit, rapid response, and the enduring power of connection in the face of adversity.
