Hidden among Bonn’s bustling streets lies a tranquil haven. The Evangelischer Friedhof Holzlar is more than just a cemetery. It’s a living testament to Bonn’s rich history. A small plot of land only 330 square meters. It holds stories of faith perseverance and community.

Established in 1648 after the Thirty Years’ War the Evangelischer Friedhof Holzlar is among the oldest cemeteries in the Rhineland. Its origins are rooted in religious persecution. Tilman Linder a farmer was forced to flee because of his Protestant faith. He found refuge in Holzlar. Unable to bury his family in the Catholic cemetery he chose his own garden. This small act of defiance birthed the Evangelischer Friedhof Holzlar.

The oldest gravestone dates back to 1658. It bears the inscription “M Linder”. This simple marker tells the story of the Linder family’s enduring legacy. The family later changed their name to Linden. Their story continues to resonate even today in the Lindershausweg a street near the cemetery. Another family the Greiffs also contributed to the cemetery’s history. Their shared faith and resilience are embodied in the three oldest gravestones.

Economic hardship after 1658 caused many burials to be unmarked. But the Evangelischer Friedhof Holzlar’s story expanded in 1757. The beginning of brown coal mining brought Leopold Bleibtreu to the area. He expanded the cemetery in 1816. He reserved one side for his family and the other for community members. The influx of workers from the Alaunhütte on the Hardt further shaped the cemetery’s community. Bleibtreu also added a fence and entrance gate. Access was through the Greiff family’s farmyard.

Today the Evangelischer Friedhof Holzlar stands as a symbol of faith and community. Fifteen graves bear the name Bleibtreu. The cemetery remains a testament to the lives lived and lost. Despite being closed since 1968 the Evangelischer Friedhof Holzlar continues to attract visitors. It offers a glimpse into Bonn’s vibrant past. Its quiet beauty and historical significance make it a unique place to reflect and remember. Even today the Evangelischer Friedhof Holzlar thrives with 33 different plant species. It is a quiet haven of wildflowers and history. A peaceful reminder of the strength of the human spirit.
