Did you know that Gembrook’s name comes from tiny gems? Early settlers discovered small emeralds sapphires and garnets in local creeks. This charming town in Victoria Australia boasts a rich history. It began in 1873 as a farming and timber community. The fertile land was ideal for dairy farming and orchards. Timber provided essential income.

Gembrook’s connection to the Puffing Billy Railway is legendary. Opened in 1900 this narrow-gauge line brought tourists from Melbourne. It also transported timber and local produce back to the city. Over 20 timber mills thrived in the area using narrow-gauge tramways. Sadly devastating fires in 1926 and 1939 destroyed many mills. The line eventually closed in 1954. Motor vehicles had become more popular. The good news is that a portion of the Puffing Billy Railway reopened in 1962 as a heritage tourist line. It eventually reached Gembrook again in 1998.

The Ranges Hotel a popular spot for day-trippers was sadly destroyed by fire in 2018. It was originally built in 1894 and expanded in 1901. Gembrook’s history is full of contrasts. The town has evolved from a farming and timber center to a thriving tourist destination. Potato farming once a major industry left some land unsuitable for grazing due to pesticide use.

Today Gembrook offers a blend of history and modern amenities. There’s a monthly market at the railway station. Several restaurants and cafes are open. The Gillwell Park Scout Camp one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere is also located nearby. Gembrook’s story is a testament to its resilience and adaptability. It continues to attract visitors who appreciate its unique charm. The town has a vibrant community spirit. This is evident in the local football team Gembrook Cockatoo. It competes in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League. A volunteer fire brigade ensures the safety of the community. Gembrook is indeed a place where history and nature beautifully intertwine. It is a delightful destination for those who enjoy a slower pace of life.
