Legend says a local landowner, Captain Baltazar, was surveying his property when a snake attacked him. He prayed to the Virgin Mary, and a lizard appeared, saving his life. Grateful for this divine intervention, Baltazar built a small chapel on the very spot. Over time, this humble chapel transformed into the grand Comunidade N.S. da Penha we see today. In 1817, a benefactor carved a staircase directly into the rock face. This 382-step stairway became a path for pilgrims, many climbing on their knees as a testament to their faith and answered prayers. The Comunidade N.S. da Penha is more than just a church. It’s a symbol of hope, especially for the surrounding neighborhoods. It has served as a beacon during turbulent times. In the early 2010s, after police pacified the area, Christmas mass attendance surged from a mere 200 in 2009 to over 5,000 in 2010. This resurgence in faith demonstrates the church’s enduring importance to the community. While the church’s location and legend are captivating, the Comunidade N.S. da Penha also offers breathtaking views of Rio de Janeiro. It’s a unique vantage point, different from the typical tourist spots. Inside, you’ll find a simple yet powerful space. A single altar in the chancel houses the statue of the patron saint. The older altar of the original chapel, with its image of Our Lady of the Rosary, is visible in the background. Two towers, complete with bells brought from Portugal, frame the church’s silhouette.
