Hear the echoes of history whisper from the weathered stones of Parroquia de Santa Ana. This unassuming church in Casillas del Angel holds centuries of stories within its walls.

Built during the 18th century Parroquia de Santa Ana is more than just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the island’s growth and faith. It reflects the economic prosperity of Fuerteventura during that time. A surge in population and agriculture led to the creation of new settlements. This ultimately caused a decentralization of the church.

In 1708 a restructuring plan began. It split Fuerteventura into four parishes. Parroquia de Santa Ana in Casillas del Angel became one of them. Construction on the church had significantly progressed by 1744. However it wasn’t fully completed until 1781. You can still see the date on a plaque on its facade. Later in the 18th century it was expanded and renovated.

Look at the church’s facade. Note the dark volcanic stone. The simple elegance of its semi-circular archway speaks volumes. Inside the long nave is covered by a double-pitched roof. The presbytery has a four-pitched roof. Notice the wooden beams supporting the ceiling. They rest on a decorative floor. Simple paired tie rods further strengthen the structure.

The church treasures a remarkable sculptural group depicting Saint Anne and the Virgin Mary. It’s a true artistic gem. Also admire the carved wooden choir. It features eight panels. Each shows a different Evangelist or Church Father. The main altarpiece is equally impressive. It’s an anonymous 18th-century work. Note its intricate decoration of plant motifs and volutes.

The Parroquia de Santa Ana’s history extends beyond its walls. Fray Andresito a well-known Fuerteventura personality was baptized here in 1800. His godfather was Presbyter Antonio Mena del Castillo. The church holds many other anonymous works of art. These include sculptures paintings and liturgical objects. All demonstrate the skill of local artisans.

In 2015 renovations were made to the church’s surroundings. This project involved removing aggressive vegetation. The renovations aimed to improve the area without altering the church’s structure. The improvements include new paving materials and landscaping. The new lighting brilliantly illuminates the church’s facade at night. Parroquia de Santa Ana stands as a silent observer. It has witnessed the island’s evolution for centuries. This simple church offers a profound connection to Fuerteventura’s past and present.
