Let’s rewind to 1943. A group of enthusiastic locals formed the Eltham Little Theatre Company. Their mission was simple to promote drama, music, and the arts in Eltham. For years, they were nomads performing in various spaces. Finally, in 1946, they found a home at Eltham Parish Hall, now The Bob Hope Theatre.
Imagine those early days. The theatre buzzed with activity. There were 600 members. 25 societies were affiliated. A new production was staged every other weekend. The Eltham Little Theatre became the heart of Eltham’s cultural life. Members dreamed of buying the building. They tirelessly raised funds. By 1957, the asking price seemed impossible to reach.
Fast forward to 1979. The theatre faced closure. The lease wasn’t renewed. Funds were low. Members were ready to give up hope. But then, fate intervened.
Bob Hope, the legendary comedian, was born in Eltham. He was in the UK promoting a golf tournament. He heard about the theatre’s plight. Hope stepped in to help. He raised £58,000 through his golf tournaments in 1980 and 1981.
Dickie Henderson, vice-chairman of the Bob Hope British Golf Classic, also helped. He gave a benefit performance at the theatre. Stars like Max Wall attended. In November 1982, the freehold was purchased. Eltham Little Theatre was renamed The Bob Hope Theatre.
In September 1982, Bob Hope became co-honorary president. Former US President Gerald Ford, also involved with the Bob Hope Classic Golf Tournament, shared the title. In 1991, Hope donated £28,000 from a London Palladium performance. This money went directly to the theatre.
Today, The Bob Hope Theatre thrives. It’s run by dedicated members of the Eltham Little Theatre Company. They stage about 11 shows each year. These shows include a pantomime and an annual musical. Other companies also perform here, adding another 15 productions annually.
