In 1900, a grand vision took root on Adenauerallee. A widow, Mrs. Johann Heinrich Ermekeil, commissioned a magnificent villa. This villa, now known as Villa Ermekeil, was designed as one half of a double villa. Sadly, its twin was never built, leaving Villa Ermekeil standing alone in its splendor. The Westdeutsche Bau-Actien-Gesellschaft, under the watchful eye of architect August Scheidgen, brought Mrs. Ermekeil’s dream to life. Villa Ermekeil quickly became a landmark on Adenauerallee, its Neo-Gothic architecture a testament to the era’s opulence. Tuff and sandstone adorned its facade. Intricate carvings and varied window shapes added a touch of whimsy. In 1913, the villa changed hands, becoming the property of A. J. Eschbaum. Mr. Eschbaum, a man of refined tastes, decided to make his mark on Villa Ermekeil. In 1916, he commissioned renovations. Once again, August Scheidgen, the original architect, oversaw the transformation. The renovations included expanding the dining room and restroom, relocating the courtyard entrance, and converting a balcony into a closed veranda. When Bonn became the capital of West Germany in 1949, Villa Ermekeil found itself at the heart of the political landscape. The Central Association of German Crafts acquired the villa and its grounds. They renovated the villa and constructed an adjacent office building. This became the House of German Crafts, inaugurated in 1953. Over the years, Villa Ermekeil has housed various prestigious organizations. It has served as the headquarters for the German Council on Foreign Relations and even housed the Atlantic Bridge Association in its attic. Today, the Center for Molecular Biodiversity Research, part of the Museum Koenig, occupies this historical gem. Villa Ermekeil stands proudly on Adenauerallee, a testament to a rich past. It whispers tales of elegance, political intrigue, and scientific discovery.
