In the heart of Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, Cours Pierre-Antoine Cluzeau whispers tales of a remarkable artist. Cours Pierre-Antoine Cluzeau isn’t just a street. It’s a tribute to Pierre-Antoine Cluzeau, a painter, engraver, and illustrator. Born in Saint-Mandé in 1884, Cluzeau eventually called Saint-Maur-des-Fossés home. Cours Pierre-Antoine Cluzeau is named in his honor. Cluzeau’s life was a vibrant tapestry of art. He honed his drawing skills in the evenings at M. Bricoux’s studio in Place des Vosges while working a day job in Issy-les-Moulineaux. His family moved to Saint-Maur-des-Fossés in 1904. Just a year later, his work was displayed at the town hall. He garnered two bronze medals from the City of Paris in 1908. That same year, he was accepted into the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Under the tutelage of masters like Luc-Olivier Merson and Gustave Surand, Cluzeau’s talent flourished. Cluzeau’s artistic journey took him to Murat and Mauriac in 1912, where he created a series of enhanced drawings. Inspired by aquafortist Victor-Valéry Lochelongue, he began etching, using his Auvergne drawings as inspiration. During World War I, although exempt from service due to his asthma, Cluzeau served as a nurse at the Jardin colonial de Nogent-sur-Marne. There, he sketched portraits of wounded soldiers. He even contributed to the decoration of a mosque built for some of the wounded, creating stained glass and paintings. Cluzeau’s art found a wider audience through exhibitions. He showcased his engravings at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris starting in 1920 and also at the Salon des Artistes Français. His work earned him recognition. In 1920, he received the Belin-Dollet prize from the Société des Artistes Français, followed by a bronze medal at the same salon in 1924. Cluzeau’s legacy extends beyond his artwork. Cours Pierre-Antoine Cluzeau stands as a testament to his contribution to the artistic landscape. As you stroll along Cours Pierre-Antoine Cluzeau, remember the artist who captured the essence of his time, from the banks of the Seine to the heart of Paris. His art lives on, a picturesque journey through time and space.
