Around the year 1000 at the request of Archbishop Heribert of Cologne and with the emperor’s intervention she also became abbess of St Mary in the Capitol in Cologne. Her reputation for kindness and generosity spread throughout Cologne where she continued her charitable work caring for the needy during times of hardship.

Her life however wasn’t without its struggles. The Vita Adelheidis a biographical work reveals the challenges of balancing her duties at two monasteries. Her sisters in Vilich felt neglected as she devoted time to Cologne. Despite this Adelheid remained a steadfast leader admired and respected. Even today several churches monasteries and schools in Bonn and Cologne bear her name reflecting her lasting impact. She was declared a Servant of God in 1922 and canonized in 1966. In 2008 she became the third patron saint of Bonn solidifying her place in the city’s history and heart.

The Adelheid-Statue itself is relatively recent. Created by sculptor Elisabeth Perger it was unveiled in 2015.
