“Did you know Schuppen 10 once stood on the site of three older sheds?” I ask.

Schuppen 10 in Lubeck is more than just a building. It’s a survivor a testament to Lubeck’s rich maritime history. Right here before us stands a structure with a fascinating past. Built in 1889 it replaced three earlier sheds destroyed by a devastating fire in 1889. The new Schuppen 10 was part of a larger complex Schuppen 10/11. This complex served as a vital hub for Lubeck’s port operations for over a century.

Imagine bustling activity. Workers loading and unloading goods. The sounds of ships horns and the shouts of dockworkers filling the air. Schuppen 10 wasn’t just storage it housed administrative offices too. The Halland Line a passenger shipping company operating routes to Copenhagen Malmo and Gothenburg even made Schuppen 11 its headquarters from 1907. Schuppen 10 also served as a customs office from 1895.

The building saw many changes throughout the 20th century. It was remodeled twice most recently in 1936. That year the sheds received their current numbers. For many years the Hafenbetriebsverein Lubeck the Lubeck port operations association occupied Schuppen 10. Schuppen 11 housed another company.

Interestingly enough Schuppen 10 holds a special place in local traditions. It’s a gathering point every May Day for the Lubeck DGB demonstration at Lubeck Market.

In 2008 the Lubeck Port Authority LPA took ownership of the complex. By 2012 significant damage threatened the historic structures. A three-million-euro project called Gesamthafen transformed Schuppen 10/11. The renovation carefully preserved the historical character while modernizing the interior. The result is a blend of old and new a beautiful space for modern businesses and a restaurant.

Now we stand in front of this grand structure. A piece of Lubeck’s past carefully preserved for its future. Schuppen 10 reminds us of the enduring legacy of the port city of Lubeck.
