Between the trees a city thrives. This is Cuautitlán. Nestled in the State of Mexico it’s a bustling municipality. Cuautitlán’s name itself whispers history. It means ‘between the trees’ in Nahuatl a testament to its origins.

Long before the Spanish arrived Cuautitlán existed. Its story began in the mid-14th century. The area had been settled for ages. It fell under Azcapotzalco’s rule. Later it became a province under Tlacopan. The Triple Alliance conquered it. The city was divided into four sub-provinces.

After the Spanish Conquest Franciscans arrived. They evangelized Cuautitlán. They built the San Buenaventura monastery. They established the brotherhood of the Purísima Concepción de Nuestra Señora de Cuautitlán. A significant figure Saint Juan Diego is said to have lived here. He lived with his wife María Lucía in a modest mud house. This house surprisingly still stands.

Cuautitlán gained city status in 1968. It’s a city rich with history and culture. It’s the birthplace of the renowned painter and sculptor Luis Nishizawa. His art reflects the spirit of Cuautitlán. The city’s legacy extends beyond its borders.

Cuautitlán’s municipal seat governs several communities. Colonia Venecia Ejido de Santa Bárbara and many others are part of it. The municipality itself spans 40.9 square kilometers.
