Ever wondered how a school founded in 1967 became a cornerstone of Enfield’s educational landscape? That’s the story of Bishop Stopford’s School. It stands on Brick Lane a testament to a vision realized.

Bishop Stopford’s School emerged from a century-long desire to establish a Church of England secondary school in Enfield. Before its founding children had several Church primary schools but no Church secondary school. The Right Reverend Robert Wright Stopford Bishop of London made that vision a reality. Bishop Stopford’s School opened its doors on September 7 1967 in the buildings of the old Suffolk’s Secondary Modern School.

Bishop Stopford’s School quickly became known for its commitment to academic excellence and strong traditions. It holds a specialism in mathematics computing and engineering. The school fosters a balanced education. It also supports pupils aged 11 to 19.

But there is more to Bishop Stopford’s School than just academics. The school has unique traditions like the School Pilgrimage. Every year pupils from Years 7 to 10 undertake an eleven-mile sponsored walk along the River Lea Navigation. The funds raised support the school foundation. Another tradition is the Beating of the Bounds which has been modernized but its traditions are still remembered.

Then there are the gowns worn by prefects a symbol of authority and tradition. House Prefects wear grey gowns School Prefects wear royal blue and Senior Prefects wear navy blue. The most senior prefects the Head Master’s Prefects wear gowns with a thick red stripe.

The school’s pipe organ has a unique story. It was created from the remains of a church organ salvaged from Sandylands Methodist Church in Morecambe Lancashire. Bought for a humble sum it’s now insured for hundreds of thousands of pounds. Notable organists like Carlo Curley and Thomas Trotter have played it.

Bishop Stopford’s School also boasts a distinctive prayer. The Prayer For All Stopfordians is a special prayer for everyone connected to the school living or dead. It is said every morning in the school chapel.

Bishop Stopford’s School continues to evolve adapting to the needs of its students and the changing world. Tammy Day is the current head teacher. The school continues its mission to provide a well-rounded education rooted in Anglican values. Bishop Stopford’s School is a place where tradition meets innovation.
