Established in 1980 the Perpustakaan Nasional RI wasn’t built overnight. It’s the result of merging four separate libraries. This consolidation brought together years of accumulated knowledge. The initial collections? They trace their roots back to 1778. The Royal Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences the first of its kind in Asia laid the groundwork.
This society fostered scholarship. They published extensively building up a substantial library. This library moved to the National Museum in 1868. It continued to grow despite wartime challenges. Japanese forces during World War II surprisingly did not interfere. The library’s legal deposit powers meant it accumulated a huge archive of wartime publications.
The path to becoming the National Library of Indonesia was long. A 1961 plan for a national library faltered. It wasn’t until 1980 that Minister Daoed Joesoef issued the decree. The current building opened in 1988 thanks to funding from Madam Tien Suharto. She was inspired by a 1968 exhibition of colonial and national newspapers.
But this wasn’t the end of the story. In 2017 a new building was inaugurated. President Joko Widodo himself presided over the opening. This new building stands 127 meters tall. It’s claimed to be the world’s tallest library building.
