Picture this a bustling road junction. That’s Maybury in Edinburgh. It’s a place where history whispers from beneath the tarmac. Maybury isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a story etched in stone and hidden in bogs.

Maybury’s history stretches back millennia. Long before cars and trams archaeologists unearthed evidence of Neolithic farmers. They found a trackway and a stone structure dating back to the first millennium AD. The area was once farmland. The former Gogar Loch described in the 1600s was less a lake more a boggy marsh. Imagine the Neolithic farmers tilling this land. Imagine the Bronze Age people who also lived here.

The Maybury Roadhouse dominates the modern landscape. Built in 1936 it’s a stunning example of Art Deco architecture. Designed by Paterson and Broom it once served weary travelers. Now a casino it still retains much of its Art Deco charm. It’s a listed building Category B a testament to its architectural significance. Nearby stand two other listed buildings 138-140 Glasgow Road. These traditional farm cottages once belonged to North Gyle Farm. Built in the 19th century they reflect efforts to improve farm workers’ living conditions. They’re Category C listed buildings.

Maybury also boasts a police box and Cook’s Garage. Built or recorded in the 1930s they stand as silent witnesses to the area’s evolution. In more recent times residents have been actively involved in community clean-ups. They’ve cleared footpaths along Maybury Road. There have even been plans for a new primary school and health centre. Maybury is constantly evolving. It’s a blend of past and present a story still being written.

So next time you’re in Edinburgh. Remember the Maybury. Remember the farmers. Remember the Art Deco grandeur. Remember the community spirit. Maybury is more than a road junction. It’s a living testament to Edinburgh’s rich history.
