Founded in 1983, the Hyderi Islamic Centre stands before us. It is more than just a building. It is a vibrant hub for London’s Shia Muslim community. The Hyderi Islamic Centre began with Khoja families who emigrated from East Africa. They needed a place for their socio-religious functions. Before Hyderi, they traveled to Hammersmith.

Gulamali Dewji was Hyderi’s first elected President. Sultan Datoo, Late Noorali Bharwani, Gulamali Janmohamed Asharia, Late Hassanali Suleman and late Noormohamed Walji were also founding members. These dedicated individuals saw the community’s need. The centre has grown through renovations and extensions. It ensures it meets the needs of the growing community.

But Hyderi Islamic Centre is not just for its members. It actively builds bridges. It fosters relationships with neighbors and local organizations. Hyderi conveys Islam as peaceful and beneficial to British society.

Every day, the Hyderi Islamic Centre hosts evening prayers. Thursday nights bring weekly supplications and lectures. But that’s not all. Interfaith programs are common. Politicians and community leaders are invited to speak. They address pressing issues of the day.

Throughout the year, Hyderi organizes important events. Ramadhan, Muharram, and Safar are observed with devotion. Eid functions bring joy to all. Birthdays and martyrdoms of the Holy Prophet and his progeny are commemorated too.

Stepping inside, you might hear the laughter of children. The Hyderi Nursery provides daily childcare. Soon, they will move to a new, adjacent building. You might also see seniors enjoying activities. The Hyderi Senior Citizens’ Association meets weekly. They have health talks and excursions. These excursions sometimes venture abroad.

On Saturdays, the Hyderi Islamic School buzzes with activity. Children aged 5-18 receive Islamic education. It was the first UK Islamic school to offer GCSE and A-level qualifications in Islamic Studies.

Hyderi also boasts impressive sports teams. They meet weekly and compete in tournaments. They bring home many trophies. The trophy cabinets at the centre are constantly being filled.

The Hyderi Islamic Centre stands as a testament to community. It shows faith, education, and togetherness. It started as a small gathering place. Now, it is an integral part of London. It is a place where faith thrives and community bonds strengthen.
