Skæring is known for its beautiful beaches. It is also known for the marina Kaløvig Bådelaug. But there is also Skæring Hede. It was once a military shooting range. Today, it is a public park.
Let’s dive into the story of Skæring Hede. It is also called Skæring Mindelund. This area spans 8.5 hectares. Once a vast heath, it has transformed. Suburbs and summer houses have taken over much of the land. Despite this, the remaining area is a cherished public forest park. Aarhus Municipality manages it carefully.
Skæring Hede is a place of recreation. It is an important local landmark. You will find mixed pine and birch forests here. Walking paths wind through the trees. But there is a more profound story here. Skæring Hede is a World War II memorial.
During the German occupation, the heath became a shooting range in 1943. On December 2nd, 1943, five Danish resistance fighters were executed here. This was one of the first mass executions during the war.
These brave men were part of a resistance group. They blew up three bridges at Langå. This disrupted German rail transport for a month. The Gestapo tracked them down. Kai Hannibal Hoff led the operation. He was killed trying to escape.
Anders W. Andersen, Georg Mørch Christiansen, Otto Manley Christiansen, Sven Christian Johannesen, and Oluf Kroer were sentenced to death. Their bodies were secretly buried in Husbjerg Klit.
After the war, a memorial was created here in Skæring Hede. A massive granite boulder stands as its centerpiece. It lists the names of the executed men. A poem by Kaj Munk is also inscribed. Oak trees were planted. One for each of the five men killed.
Skæring Hede connects to another WWII memorial. This is Allerstrupgård Skov. It marks “Mustard Point”. Here, the Hvidsten Group received supplies from the Allies. Members of the group were executed. The Hvidsten Group supplied the explosives for the Langå bridges bombing.
Today, Skæring Hede is a place of remembrance. It is also a place for learning. A Grejbase offers equipment for marine biology studies. This is due to the proximity to the coast.
