An Alcoholics Anonymous group also meets here. The meetings take place downstairs. Enter on the ramp to the church. Monday at 6:00 pm is a Silent Recovery meeting. Friday at 6:00 pm is a Sober Hands meeting.
Saint John’s United Church in Mokena, Illinois, has a rich history. It began in 1862. German and Swiss settlers needed a spiritual home. The church was first known as the German United Evangelical Saint John’s Church. The first church building was at Second and Union Streets. The current sanctuary construction started in 1922. It was dedicated in 1923.
In 1934, the church changed its name. It became St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church. This was due to denominational mergers. In 1957, the United Church of Christ formed. It was a merger of the Evangelical and Reformed denomination and the Congregational Christian denomination. On November 3, 1957, the congregation’s name changed. It became St. John’s United Church of Christ. In 2012, the church celebrated its 150th anniversary.
Saint John’s United Church is part of the United Church of Christ. The UCC emphasizes extravagant welcome. They believe that “God is Still Speaking”. The local church has independent governance. They actively witness on issues of justice and mercy. The UCC logo includes the theme “That They May All Be One”.
